The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is arranging the inclusion of buses and delivery service trucks in the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program which the government plans to implement this year.
DOTr Undersecretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure, Thomas Orbos, says that the department has conducted a dialogue between truck and bus owners regarding the impending phase out of old PUVs.
Though he did not mention the exact date for the implementation, he assured that the modernization will not affect the daily lives of bus commuters; as well as the operation of delivery trucks.
Based on the initial modernization plan, all jeepneys age 15 years old above will be phased out and banned from plying the road.
"The 15-year-old aspect, hindi na nga ho namin iniintindi muna [we're not worrying about that yet] because if we do, all the jeepneys will have to go out. So we're looking at roadworthiness," Orbos said in an interview in CNN Philippines' The Source.
Jeepney owners and drivers were given 3 years to adjust under the government’s new modernization scheme.
